The world of raw selvedge denim jeans is ever-so fascinating, blending together both the old and the new at almost every single step of the way. As of recent, the purveyor of Japanese raw selvedge denim jeans, Big John, has created a seemingly record-breaking pair of jeans that uses and authentic 40-year-old deadstock raw denim fabric, that has been treated with one of the most unique combinations of dying methods we have ever seen for one pair of jeans.
The Big John Japan Deadstock Wild Duck M1015RC Raw Denim Jeans are a wide-straight pair of raw denim jeans that Big John has developed, combining their Wild Duck cut with this incredible 40-year-old denim that has been untouched for decades. This fabric actually combines two different natural indigo yarns; one having been dyed with the Awa-Shoai dying method of natural indigo, native to the Tokushima region, which is a hank dying mthod, in with the yarns are bundled by hand, and repeated dipped in a natural indigo dye bath. The other dying method used is the rope-dye method, which is the method of dying primarily used for raw denim jeans today.

The combination of these two dying methods of natural indigo gives these jeans a striking vibrant blue color, that is noticeably more saturated than the standard deep indigo color that we see from raw denim jeans today. This color of raw denim also results in a gorgeous fading capability that creates a greenish-blue hue with yellow undertones, and the combined yarn-dying methods also give these jeans a very unique, almost streaky fade textures that truly defines the craftsmanship and artistry of Big John jeans.
The fading capability combined with the expertly-cut silhouette of the Wild Duck series by Big John makes these jeans a truly special piece of Japanese raw denim history, that you only get one chance a lifetime to find. Personally, the choice to cut this particular raw denim in their Wild Duck cut as opposed to their more traditional raw denim silhouettes and jeans fits, is a choice that we hold to a high regard, as this caliber of fabric deserves a unique silhouette that makes the appearance of this fabric truly distinct.
